| 5 | WHEREAS, among cancer cases in the state, colon cancer is |
| 6 | the second most common cancer death among men and women, and |
| 7 | WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer |
| 8 | Society estimates that a total of 9,950 new cases of colon |
| 9 | cancer will be diagnosed among the state's residents and that |
| 10 | 3,840 Floridians will die from the disease during the year 2004, |
| 11 | and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, complying with the American Cancer Society's colon |
| 13 | cancer screening guidelines can lower the number of cases by |
| 14 | leading to the early detection and removal of polyps that could |
| 15 | become cancerous, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, when diagnosed early, 91 percent of people with |
| 17 | colon cancer survive, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 19 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 20 | Florida: |

| 22 | That the House of Representatives recognizes the month of |
| 23 | March 2004 as Colon Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and urges |
| 24 | all Floridians to understand the risks associated with colon |
| 25 | cancer, to take preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to |
| 26 | undergo early detection procedures in compliance with the |
| 27 | American Cancer Society's screening guidelines as effective |
| 28 | preventive measures. |
