5 | WHEREAS, Polk County encompasses 17 municipalities in the |
6 | heart of Central Florida, including Auburndale, Bartow, |
7 | Davenport, Dundee, Eagle Lake, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Haines |
8 | City, Highland Park, Hillcrest Heights, Lake Alfred, Lake |
9 | Hamilton, Lake Wales, Lakeland, Mulberry, Polk City, and Winter |
10 | Haven, and |
11 | WHEREAS, Polk County covers 2,010 square miles of land |
12 | dotted with more than 554 freshwater lakes and lush nature |
13 | preserves featuring rare and exotic wildlife, rolling hills, |
14 | sparkling rivers, beautiful savannas, and pinewood forests, and |
15 | WHEREAS, Polk County is known for its historic charm and |
16 | small-town atmosphere, blended with its largely undiscovered and |
17 | unspoiled natural surroundings, and |
18 | WHEREAS, the vacation destinations of Polk County are |
19 | visited by more than 1.5 million tourists annually and include |
20 | Historic Bok Santuary, Hollis Gardens, Fantasy of Flight, the |
21 | Water Ski Hall of Fame, and the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture |
22 | at Florida Southern College, and |
23 | WHEREAS, Polk County has long been blessed by the State of |
24 | Florida's great interest in its community and economic |
25 | development, witnessed again recently by the state's partnership |
26 | with Polk County to save and restore the treasured landmark |
27 | Cypress Gardens so that all of the state's citizens and tourists |
28 | from throughout the world may enjoy its abundant natural beauty, |
29 | and |
30 | WHEREAS, Polk County has been called the Largemouth Bass |
31 | Fishing Capital of the World for its wonderful fishing in |
32 | numerous undeveloped lakes, as well as in Winter Haven's chain |
33 | of 14 lakes connected by well-established canals, and |
34 | WHEREAS, Polk County is home to the Detroit Tigers and the |
35 | Cleveland Indians during spring training season, and |
36 | WHEREAS, Polk County is the center of citrus production and |
37 | phosphate mining for the world, and |
38 | WHEREAS, Polk County is the corporate headquarters for |
39 | Publix Super Markets, the largest private company in the state, |
40 | employing more than 120,500 persons, and is also home to the |
41 | W.S. Badcock Corporation, which has been located in Mulberry |
42 | since 1904 and is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, |
