2 | A resolution commending Frederick B. Karl. |

4 | WHEREAS, Frederick B. Karl was born in Daytona Beach to the |
5 | late Fred J. and Mary Karl and attended the University of |
6 | Florida before earning a law degree from Stetson University, and |
7 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl served in the United States Army and |
8 | served as Tank Platoon Leader in the 20th and 2nd Armored |
9 | Divisions, where he was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars and |
10 | the Purple Heart medal, and |
11 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl thereafter began a career in the public |
12 | sector, including serving as State Representative, as State |
13 | Senator, and as the first legislatively appointed Public |
14 | Counsel, and |
15 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl became Justice Karl when he was elected |
16 | to the Florida Supreme Court, the last elected Justice, and |
17 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl co-authored Law Review articles used by |
18 | the Legislature when considering impeachment or executive |
19 | suspension, and |
20 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl has served in other capacities, including |
21 | attorney for the Volusia County School District and the Cities |
22 | of Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach before relocating to Tampa, |
23 | and |
24 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl became Special Counsel, Chief Legal |
25 | Officer, and Administrator to Hillsborough County before |
26 | becoming President and Chief Executive Officer of Tampa General |
27 | Hospital, and |
28 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl then retired but was called back as |
29 | Attorney for the City of Tampa in March 2003, a position from |
30 | which he retired April 2, 2004, and |
31 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl has received awards for his service, |
32 | ranging from Florida Trend Magazine's "Florida's Most |
33 | Influential Men" to the Equal Opportunity Employer of the Year |
34 | by the Tampa-Hillsborough Urban League, while also serving on a |
35 | variety of boards too numerous to mention, and |
36 | WHEREAS, Mr. Karl was known and regarded for his |
37 | intelligence, eloquence, and capability of facilitating |
38 | compromise, being called a "brilliant public servant" by the |
39 | Tampa Tribune, a description echoed throughout the community, |
40 | NOW, THEREFORE, |

42 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
43 | Florida: |

45 | That Frederick B. Karl is recognized for his contributions |
46 | to Florida, Hillsborough County, and the City of Tampa in |
47 | serving with distinction for almost half a century in both |
48 | elected and the highest level of senior management positions. |
49 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
50 | presented to Frederick B. Karl as a tangible token of the |
51 | sentiments expressed herein. |
