| 5 | WHEREAS, vitiligo is a genetic autoimmune disorder of |
| 6 | unknown etiology that affects many Americans both aesthetically |
| 7 | and emotionally, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, an estimated six million Americans are afflicted |
| 9 | with vitiligo, including men, women, and children of all ages |
| 10 | and ethnicities, and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, although defined as a skin disorder, vitiligo is |
| 12 | also an autoimmune disease and those afflicted run the risk of |
| 13 | Addison's disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, pernicious |
| 14 | anemia, and alopecia areata, and |
| 15 | WHEREAS, the American Vitiligo Research Foundation, Inc., |
| 16 | has designated the month of April as "Vitiligo Awareness Month" |
| 17 | in an attempt to promote knowledge regarding this disease, to |
| 18 | help those who suffer from its effects, and to reduce the |
| 19 | discrimination now suffered by many of its victims, NOW, |
| 20 | THEREFORE, |

| 22 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 23 | Florida: |

| 25 | That the House of Representatives joins in the recognition |
| 26 | of April 2004 as "Vitiligo Awareness Month," urges all |
| 27 | Floridians to become more knowledgeable of the symptoms and |
| 28 | tragic effects of this disease, and extends to the American |
| 29 | Vitiligo Research Foundation, Inc., its sincere wishes for |
| 30 | speedy success in its search for a cure for vitiligo. |
