4 | Florida Day" in Tallahassee. |

6 | WHEREAS, the University of Florida, the state's only |
7 | university honored by membership in the prestigious Association |
8 | of American Universities, has recently completed its |
9 | sesquicentennial celebration and now, led by its new president, |
10 | Dr. J. Bernard Machen, looks forward to even greater |
11 | achievements in teaching, research, and service, and |
12 | WHEREAS, in 2003, the university ranked first among all |
13 | universities in landing International Baccalaureate students and |
14 | was first among all public universities in the number of |
15 | National Achievement Scholars enrolled and second for National |
16 | Merit Scholar enrollees, and |
17 | WHEREAS, one of the five largest in the nation, with |
18 | students from all 67 Florida counties, the university was |
19 | awarded a record $458 million in research and training grants in |
20 | academic year 2002-2003, earned a Top-5 ranking by Kiplinger |
21 | Magazine, and is one of the most diverse in the number of |
22 | academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, |
23 | and |
24 | WHEREAS, the university's Institute of Food and |
25 | Agricultural Sciences provides extension services to each |
26 | Florida county, its health-related research and clinics serve |
27 | Floridians each day, and its faculty, staff, and students |
28 | contribute donations and charitable services to the local |
29 | community, and |
30 | WHEREAS, a national Top-Ten student-athletic program for |
31 | the past 20 years, the top-ranked varsity program for both men |
32 | and women consistently produces exceptional student athletes, |
33 | placing a record 193 student-athletes on the Southeastern |
34 | Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2002-2003, and |
35 | WHEREAS, Florida graduates have left indelible, positive |
36 | marks on society, as exemplified by Heisman Trophy and Draddy |
37 | Award winner and honors graduate Danny Wuerffel, whose efforts |
38 | off the playing field are as notable as they were on, especially |
39 | in his work with underprivileged youth, NOW, THEREFORE, |

41 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
42 | Florida: |

44 | That the House of Representatives designates April 15, |
45 | 2004, as "University of Florida Day" in Tallahassee in |
46 | recognition of the university's contributions to the state, |
47 | nation, and world. |
48 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
49 | presented to Dr. J. Bernard Machen, President of the University |
50 | of Florida, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed |
51 | herein. |
