House Resolution
2A resolution designating September 2004 as "Prostate
3Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, Florida ranks second-highest in the nation in the
6occurrence of and deaths resulting from prostate cancer, which
7is the most common cancer diagnosed among men in this state, and
8     WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more
9than 17,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed among
10men in Florida during 2004 and that more than 2,000 deaths will
11be attributed to the disease, and
12     WHEREAS, black men have the highest prostate cancer
13mortality rate in the world, a rate that is twice that of white
14men, and
15     WHEREAS, the survival rate for prostate cancer victims is
16100 percent if the disease is diagnosed in its early stages;
17accordingly, the American Cancer Society recommends that annual
18testing begin at age 50, except for men at high risk, such as
19African Americans and men with a family history of the disease,
20for whom it is suggested that annual screening begin at 45, and
21     WHEREAS, in an attempt to increase prostate cancer
22awareness and screening among African Americans, the American
23Cancer Society sponsors Men's Health Summits in at least 16
24major metropolitan areas throughout the state, and its Man-to-
25Man Program is designed to promote awareness, education, and
26support among the entire male population, NOW, THEREFORE,

28Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
29Florida:

31     That the House of Representatives designates September 2004
32as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all
33men to become more knowledgeable of the risks associated with
34the occurrence of the disease, to take preventive steps to
35minimize those risks, and to consult with their health care
36professionals regarding annual screening and adherence to
37American Cancer Society recommended guidelines.
