5 | WHEREAS, Florida ranks second-highest in the nation in the |
6 | occurrence of and deaths resulting from prostate cancer, which |
7 | is the most common cancer diagnosed among men in this state, and |
8 | WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more |
9 | than 17,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed among |
10 | men in Florida during 2004 and that more than 2,000 deaths will |
11 | be attributed to the disease, and |
12 | WHEREAS, black men have the highest prostate cancer |
13 | mortality rate in the world, a rate that is twice that of white |
14 | men, and |
15 | WHEREAS, the survival rate for prostate cancer victims is |
16 | 100 percent if the disease is diagnosed in its early stages; |
17 | accordingly, the American Cancer Society recommends that annual |
18 | testing begin at age 50, except for men at high risk, such as |
19 | African Americans and men with a family history of the disease, |
20 | for whom it is suggested that annual screening begin at 45, and |
21 | WHEREAS, in an attempt to increase prostate cancer |
22 | awareness and screening among African Americans, the American |
23 | Cancer Society sponsors Men's Health Summits in at least 16 |
24 | major metropolitan areas throughout the state, and its Man-to- |
25 | Man Program is designed to promote awareness, education, and |
26 | support among the entire male population, NOW, THEREFORE, |

28 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
29 | Florida: |

31 | That the House of Representatives designates September 2004 |
32 | as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all |
33 | men to become more knowledgeable of the risks associated with |
34 | the occurrence of the disease, to take preventive steps to |
35 | minimize those risks, and to consult with their health care |
36 | professionals regarding annual screening and adherence to |
37 | American Cancer Society recommended guidelines. |
