House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing November 2004 as Lung Cancer
3Awareness Month in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death
6in Florida, with nearly 12,400 Floridians expected to die from
7the disease in 2004 and over 13,000 more expected to be
8diagnosed with the disease, and
9     WHEREAS, cigarette smoking and other tobacco use is the
10leading cause of lung cancer, with more than 87 percent of all
11lung cancer attributed to smoking tobacco products, and
12     WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate for lung cancer is
13only 15 percent, and early detection of this disease is not only
14very difficult and costly, but has not yet been proven to
15improve survival rates, and
16     WHEREAS, the best known way to prevent lung cancer and the
17premature deaths and costs resulting from this disease is to
18never start using tobacco, and
19     WHEREAS, since the inception of the Florida Tobacco Control
20Program, smoking rates among Florida's youth have dropped to 57
21percent among middle school students and 36 percent among high
22school students, and
23     WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society, in partnership with
24the Florida Department of Health, helps adult and youth smokers
25stop smoking through the proven cessation support of the toll-
26free Quit-For-Life-Line, 1-877-U-CAN-NOW, and
27     WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
28Society is committed to preventing use of and addiction to
29tobacco by youth, as evidenced by the strong advocacy for
30Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) and the Florida Tobacco
31Control Program, NOW, THEREFORE,

33Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
34Florida:

36     That the House of Representatives recognizes the month of
37November 2004 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Florida and
38urges all Floridians to make themselves more aware of the risk
39of lung cancer associated with tobacco use, to take measures to
40minimize those risks by cessation of and abstinence from tobacco
41use, and to join the American Cancer Society in its efforts to
42promote better health and reduce the incidence of lung cancer.
