  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing the life and

  3         accomplishments of Charles W. Cherry, Sr.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, the lifetime accomplishments of Charles W.

  6  Cherry, Sr., included significant contributions and leadership

  7  in the fields of business, education, public service,

  8  publishing, civil rights, and

  9         WHEREAS, in 1967 Mr. Cherry became the first

10  African-American businessman to be admitted to the Daytona

11  Beach Board of Realtors and served on the Board for 37 years;

12  founded and served as First Chairman of the Daytona

13  Beach-Volusia County Chamber of Commerce in 1985; and was

14  President and Chief Executive Officer of Mormen Realty and

15  Development, Inc., of Daytona Beach, Tampa, and St.

16  Petersburg, from 1966 until his death on November 16, 2004,

17  and

18         WHEREAS, Mr. Cherry's contributions in the field of

19  education included teaching at Campbell Street High School in

20  the late 1950s and managing educational finances as Chief

21  Accountant for Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach from

22  1953-1956 and then as Business Manager of Clafin College in

23  Orangeburg, South Carolina, from 1956 to 1958, and

24         WHEREAS, while at Bethune-Cookman, Mr. Cherry

25  established and developed a highly successful Cooperative

26  Education Program involving students in business, government,

27  and the military, and he was Professor of Business and

28  Director of Cooperative Education at the college from 1959 to

29  1961, and

30         WHEREAS, Mr. Cherry's knowledge, vision, and energy led

31  to his appointment by Governor Rubin Askew to the Statewide

 1  Steering Committee on Health for 1977-1981; by Governor Bob

 2  Graham to the Small and Minority Business Study Commission for

 3  1984-1986; and by Governor Bob Martinez to the Florida

 4  Advisory Board for Education of Blacks in Florida in 1989, a

 5  board on which he served until his death in 2004, and

 6         WHEREAS, in the field of publishing, Mr. Cherry served

 7  form 1977 to 2004 as Managing Editor of the Daytona Times and

 8  the Ft. Pierce Florida Courier and as Senior Consultant to the

 9  CEO of Tama Broadcasting, Inc., and he was President of the

10  Southeast Black Publisher's Association from 1986 to 1995, and

11         WHEREAS, Mr. Cherry was also a dedicated civil rights

12  activist serving in a variety of state and national offices in

13  the NAACP, including State President from 1974 to 1984 and as

14  a member of the National Board of Directors from 1976 to 1989,

15  and

16         WHEREAS, the local community also found a leader in

17  Charles W. Cherry, Sr., who was elected Daytona Beach City

18  Commissioner for Zone 6 in 1995 and reelected in 1997, 1999,

19  2001, and 2003, NOW, THEREFORE,

20  

21  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

22  

23         That this legislative body does pause in its

24  deliberations to honor the memory of Charles W. Cherry, Sr.,

25  and to recognize his public service and community leadership.
