1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to physical examinations;
3 amending s. 493.6108, F.S.; authorizing
4 physician assistants or advanced registered
5 nurse practitioners to conduct physical
6 examinations of Class "G" permit applicants;
7 amending s. 633.34, F.S.; authorizing physician
8 assistants or advanced registered nurse
9 practitioners to conduct physical examinations
10 of any person applying for employment as a
11 firefighter; providing an effective date.

13 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
14
15 Section 1. Subsection (2) of section 493.6108, Florida
16 Statutes, is amended to read:
17 493.6108 Investigation of applicants by Department of
18 Agriculture and Consumer Services.--
19 (2) In addition to subsection (1), the department
20 shall make an investigation of the general physical fitness of
21 the Class "G" applicant to bear a weapon or firearm.
22 Determination of physical fitness shall be certified by a
23 physician or physician assistant currently licensed pursuant
24 to chapter 458, chapter 459, or any similar law of another
25 state or authorized to act as a licensed physician by a
26 federal agency or department or by an advanced registered
27 nurse practitioner currently licensed pursuant to chapter 464.
28 Such certification shall be submitted on a form provided by
29 the department.
30 Section 2. Subsection (5) of section 633.34, Florida
31 Statutes, is amended to read:

1 633.34 Firefighters; qualifications for
2 employment.--Any person applying for employment as a
3 firefighter must:
4 (5) Be in good physical condition as determined by a
5 medical examination given by a physician, or surgeon, or
6 physician assistant licensed to practice in the state pursuant
7 to chapter 458;, or an osteopathic physician, or surgeon, or
8 physician assistant licensed to practice in the state pursuant
9 to chapter 459; or an advanced registered nurse practitioner
10 licensed to practice in the state pursuant to chapter 464.
11 Such examination may include, but need not be limited to,
12 provisions of the National Fire Protection Association
13 Standard 1582. A medical examination evidencing good physical
14 condition shall be submitted to the division, on a form as
15 provided by rule, before an individual is eligible for
16 admission into a firefighter training program as defined in s.
17 633.35.
18 Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2005.
