  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing April 14, 2005, as

  3         Lowry Park Zoo Day in Tallahassee.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, the 2004 Legislature recognized the Lowry Park

  6  Zoo, a not-for-profit corporation located in Hillsborough

  7  County, as a state center for Florida species conservation and

  8  biodiversity, and

  9         WHEREAS, the Lowry Park Zoo is the only licensed

10  not-for-profit manatee rehabilitation facility in the world,

11  and

12         WHEREAS, the only zoo where six endangered species (the

13  Florida panther, red wolf, Florida manatee, whooping crane,

14  Key Largo wood rat, and Key deer) can be seen in one place,

15  the Lowry Park Zoo is host to an inventory of 1,600 animals,

16  and

17         WHEREAS, the Lowry Park Zoo is Florida's best-attended,

18  not-for-profit attraction and features a year-round education

19  center popularly known as "The Zoo School," with early child

20  care and preschool education, and

21         WHEREAS, Child Magazine recognized the school as the

22  "Number One Zoo in the United States for Kids," a distinction

23  based on the strict criteria and data compiled after an

24  extensive 5-month investigation of more than 150 institutions

25  belonging to the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, and

26         WHEREAS, Lowry Park Zoo has an estimated annual

27  economic impact of more than $72 million, with 80 percent of

28  its annual $12-million budget based on earned revenue, NOW,

29  THEREFORE,

31  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 1         That the Senate recognizes April 14, 2005, as Lowry

 2  Park Zoo Day in Tallahassee in recognition of its outstanding

 3  work in providing exhibits and education on species

 4  conservation and biodiversity, as the Legislature concurrently

 5  celebrates "Hillsborough County Day" at the State Capital with

 6  the second annual "Flavors of Hillsborough" event.

 7         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

 8  with the seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Lowry

 9  Park Zoo as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida

10  Senate.
