  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to building designations;

  3         designating the Florida Welcome Center on

  4         Interstate 75 at the Georgia state line as the

  5         "Joseph O. Striska Florida Welcome Center";

  6         directing the Department of Transportation to

  7         erect suitable markers; providing an effective

  8         date.

  9  

10         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska had over 30 years'

11  experience in Florida's camping, association, and tourism

12  industries, and

13         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska began his tourism career in

14  1973 with the KOA company-operated park system and managed

15  several Florida KOA parks and owned his own park and

16  campground, and

17         WHEREAS, from 1985 to 1992 Joseph O. Striska served as

18  General Manager of the Bryn Mawr Ocean Resort in St. Augustine

19  and was actively involved in the Florida Campground

20  Association, serving as a board director, treasurer, vice

21  president, and president, and

22         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska became Executive Director

23  and President of the Florida Association of R.V. Parks and

24  Campgrounds in 1993 and during his tenure, membership in the

25  association more than doubled, and the camping industry became

26  a cornerstone of the tourism industry, and

27         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska was appointed by Governor

28  Lawton Chiles to the Florida Commission on Tourism in 1994,

 1         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska was a founding partner of

 2  VISIT Florida and served as a commissioner and a chairman of

 3  the visitor services committee, and

 4         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska had a strong commitment to

 5  visitor services and his guidance and contributions concerning

 6  Florida's welcome centers reflect his dedicated leadership,

 7  and

 8         WHEREAS, Joseph O. Striska's advocacy of Florida's

 9  tourism industry, and his many accomplishments that make a

10  remarkable legacy, will be long remembered and he will be

11  deeply missed due to a tragic automobile accident August 11,

12  2004, that took his life, NOW, THEREFORE,

13  

14  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

15  

16         Section 1.  Joseph O. Striska Florida Welcome Center

17  designated; Department of Transportation to erect suitable

18  markers.--

19         (1)  The Florida Welcome Center on Interstate 75 at the

20  Georgia state line is designated as the "Joseph O. Striska

21  Florida Welcome Center."

22         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

23  erect suitable markers designating the Joseph O. Striska

24  Florida Welcome Center as described in subsection (1).

25         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2005.

28                          SENATE SUMMARY

29    Designates the state welcome center on I-75 at the
      Georgia state line as the Joseph O. Striska Florida
30    Welcome Center. Provides for the erection of markers.
