  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing the 20th Anniversary

  3         of the American Cancer Society's Relay For

  4         Life.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, what began as one man's personal statement in

  7  the fight against cancer has led to the development of a

  8  worldwide event to help banish cancer, and

  9         WHEREAS, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid

10  runner, took the first step of his 24-hour walk/run around a

11  track in Tacoma, Washington, in May 1985, and clocked 83

12  miles, raising $27,000 in support of the American Cancer

13  Society, and

14         WHEREAS, 220 supporters in 19 teams joined Dr. Klatt in

15  1986 for this overnight event, and the American Cancer Society

16  Relay For Life was born, and

17         WHEREAS, Relay For Life is the American Cancer

18  Society's signature activity, offering everyone a chance to

19  participate in the fight against cancer in their local

20  community, and

21         WHEREAS, Relay For Life has spread to more than 4,100

22  communities in the United States and 13 foreign countries in

23  the last 20 years, and

24         WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer

25  Society hosts Relay For Life events in more than 260

26  communities across the state and raised more than $14 million

27  in 2004, and

28         WHEREAS, the power of Relay For Life is that it allows

29  a community to grieve for those lost to cancer and to

30  celebrate the lives of those who have survived the disease

 1  while embracing the hope that one day cancer will be

 2  eliminated, and

 3         WHEREAS, active promotion of and participation in local

 4  Relay For Life events allows Floridians to experience the

 5  power of Relay, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That 2005 is recognized as the 20th Anniversary of the

10  American Cancer Society's signature event, Relay For Life, and

11  urges all Floridians to join their local community members in

12  the fight against cancer.
