  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commending the work of the

  3         Endometriosis Research Center and recognizing

  4         March 2005 as Endometriosis Awareness Month.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, endometriosis, a condition involving abnormal

  7  uterine cell growth, affects more women than does breast

  8  cancer, striking more than 5.5 million teens and women in the

  9  United States alone and nearly 70 million worldwide, and

10         WHEREAS, studies have shown an elevated risk of certain

11  cancers and autoimmune diseases in endometriosis patients, and

12  endometriosis is a leading cause of female infertility and

13  hysterectomy, and

14         WHEREAS, endometriosis may have a debilitating impact

15  on a woman's life and her relationships, in some cases

16  rendering her unable to work, to care for herself or her

17  family, or to go about her normal routines, and

18         WHEREAS, there is currently no definitive cure for

19  endometriosis, and

20         WHEREAS, the Endometriosis Research Center is a

21  nonprofit organization founded in 1997 to address the needs of

22  the international community of individuals who suffer from

23  endometriosis and to improve the quality of life for those

24  with the disease through education and support programs, and

25         WHEREAS, the Endometriosis Research Center works to

26  raise awareness about endometriosis throughout the medical and

27  lay communities and raises funds to facilitate and promote

28  research for effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for

29  the disease, and

30         WHEREAS, in observance of the anniversary of the

31  Endometriosis Research Center, events and activities,

 1  including ERC Casual Days, are held annually during the month

 2  of March in an effort to educate the public about the

 3  significance of this disease, to support and assist women

 4  living with the disease, and to raise funds for the

 5  organization's efforts, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That the Senate pauses in its deliberations to commend

10  the worthy efforts of the Endometriosis Research Center and to

11  recognize March 2005 as Endometriosis Awareness Month.
