  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution honoring Rotary International on

  3         the occasion of its 100th anniversary and

  4         recognizing February 23, 2005, as Rotary Day in

  5         Florida.

  6  

  7         WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Chicago was founded on

  8  February 23, 1905, when Chicago attorney Paul Harris and three

  9  business associates formed a club to share "mutual cooperation

10  and informal friendship such as all of us had once known in

11  our villages," and

12         WHEREAS, by 1921, Rotary Clubs had been formed on six

13  continents, prompting the adoption of the name Rotary

14  International in 1922, and

15         WHEREAS, as Rotary International grew, its focus

16  changed from serving the business and professional needs of

17  its members to serving communities in need, a sentiment

18  expressed in its motto: "Service Above Self," and

19         WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation, established in 1928,

20  has garnered contributions in excess of $80 million annually

21  to support a range of humanitarian grants and educational

22  programs, and

23         WHEREAS, in 1985, Rotary International made a

24  commitment to immunize all of the world's children against

25  polio, and by the centennial of Rotary in 2005, more than $500

26  million will have been committed to the eradication of polio,

27  and

28         WHEREAS, Rotary International, approaching its 100th

29  anniversary, consists of 1.2 million members in some 31,000

30  Rotary clubs in 166 countries, all committed to addressing

 1  such problems as environmental degradation, illiteracy, world

 2  hunger, and children at risk, NOW, THEREFORE,

 3  

 4  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 5  

 6         That the Florida Senate honors the ongoing

 7  contributions of Rotary International to communities

 8  throughout the state, nation, and world, and recognizes

 9  February 23, 2005, as Rotary Day in Florida.

10         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

11  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Glenn E.

12  Estess, Sr., president of Rotary International, as a token of

13  the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
