  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commending the Tampa Bay Lightning

  3         for its victory in the 2004 Stanley Cup

  4         Playoffs.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, the Tampa Bay Lightning won the coveted

  7  Stanley Cup on June 7, 2004, at the St. Pete Forum, defeating

  8  the Calgary Flames by a score of 2 to 1, and

  9         WHEREAS, this was the first Stanley Cup victory in the

10  franchise's history, culminating a stunningly successful

11  season that thrilled the Lightning's many enthusiastic fans,

12  and

13         WHEREAS, the Tampa Bay Lightning has had an

14  inspirational rise from its initial years in the early 1990's

15  as a struggling expansion team to a championship team under

16  General Manager John Feaster and Coach John Tortorella, and

17         WHEREAS, the team and its management have made

18  innumerable contributions to the vitality of the Tampa Bay

19  area and the State of Florida, including the many benefits of

20  national visibility, increased jobs and expanded economic

21  activity, wholesome family entertainment, and a unifying pride

22  in Tampa Bay and Florida, and

23         WHEREAS, additionally, the Tampa Bay Lightning

24  organization hosts several fundraisers each season to benefit

25  local charities and other worthy community causes throughout

26  the Tampa Bay area, and has created a significant range of

27  educational programs that benefit the children of Tampa Bay,

28  including programs in reading, teamwork, and career planning,

29  and

30         WHEREAS, the Lightning's Stanley Cup victory brings to

31  Tampa Bay and Florida the most famous trophy in the sporting

 1  world and the oldest trophy competed for by professional

 2  athletes, a highly celebrated prize that has traveled the

 3  world, draws its own following, and is highly beneficial in

 4  raising funds for charitable and other worthy local and

 5  regional causes, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That the Florida Senate recognizes, commends, and

10  honors the players, the coaches, and the managers and owners

11  of the Tampa Bay Lightning for their great victory in winning

12  the Stanley Cup and for all the other benefits they have

13  brought to Tampa Bay and the State of Florida.

14         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

15  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Tampa

16  Bay Lightning as a tangible token of the sentiments of the

17  Florida Senate.
