2 A resolution commending the Florida Goodwill
3 Association for its contributions to the
4 economic base of the State of Florida.

6 WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries, operating on the belief
7 that productivity and vocation are cornerstones of life, and
8 that all people have a right to be treated with dignity and
9 respect without regard to race, gender, age, marital status,
10 national origin, or state of health, is now the largest
11 nonprofit provider of vocational training and employment
12 services in the United States, and
13 WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries provides quality
14 vocational training and employment services to people who are
15 impaired by disabilities and to those who suffer other
16 disadvantages, such as being undereducated or illiterate,
17 welfare-dependent, or homeless, or having a criminal history,
18 and
19 WHEREAS, through the 103 years of its existence,
20 Goodwill Industries has successfully designed and implemented
21 many innovative vocational training and employment programs,
22 enabling millions of disabled and disadvantaged people to
23 develop career opportunities and improve the quality of their
24 lives, and
25 WHEREAS, between 2001 and 2004, 215,295 Floridians have
26 participated in the programs administered by Goodwill
27 Industries, and 52,422 of those participants have obtained
28 gainful employment in the communities in which they live, and
29 WHEREAS, between 2001 and 2004, the Florida Goodwill
30 Association, through nine local Goodwill Industries entities
31 operating throughout Florida, collectively generated

1 $550,464,241 in earnings realized by people placed in
2 community employment, resulting in a significant contribution
3 to the state's economic base and increasing its tax revenues,
4 and
5 WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries of Florida provided $1
6 million of in-kind donations to the Florida Hurricane Relief
7 Fund, providing hurricane survivors with clothing and
8 household items to assist affected Floridians recover from the
9 2004 hurricane season, NOW, THEREFORE,

11 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
12
13 That the Florida Senate commends the Florida Goodwill
14 Association and honors the organization for its valued
15 programs, which have expanded the opportunities and
16 occupational capabilities of millions of Floridians and helped
17 the state in its greatest time of need.
18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
19 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Mr. Fred
20 Shelfer, President of the Florida Goodwill Association, as a
21 tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
