1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to private security services;
3 amending s. 493.6115, F.S.; revising the types
4 of firearms that a security officer is
5 authorized to carry; providing an effective
6 date.

8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10 Section 1. Subsection (6) of section 493.6115, Florida
11 Statutes, is amended to read:
12 493.6115 Weapons and firearms.--
13 (6) Unless otherwise approved by the department, the
14 only firearm a Class "CC," Class "D," Class "M," or Class "MB"
15 licensee who has been issued a Class "G" license may carry is
16 a .38 or .357 caliber revolver with factory .38 caliber
17 ammunition only. In addition to any other firearm approved by
18 the department, a Class "C" or Class "MA" licensee who has
19 been issued a Class "G" license may carry a .38 caliber
20 revolver; or a .380 caliber or 9 millimeter semiautomatic
21 pistol; or a .357 caliber revolver with .38 caliber ammunition
22 only while performing duties authorized under this chapter. A
23 Class "C" licensee who also holds a Class "D" license, and who
24 has been issued a Class "G" license, may carry a 9 millimeter
25 semiautomatic pistol while performing security-related
26 services. No licensee may carry more than two firearms upon
27 her or his person when performing her or his duties. A
28 licensee may only carry a firearm of the specific type and
29 caliber with which she or he is qualified pursuant to the
30 firearms training referenced in subsection (8) or s.
31 493.6113(3)(b).

1 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2005.

3 STATEMENT OF SUBSTANTIAL CHANGES CONTAINED IN
COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR
4 Senate Bill 2278

6 The Committee Substitute permits private investigator, private
investigator intern and security officer licensees who have
7 been issued a Class "G" statewide firearm license by the
Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, to carry a
8 .380 caliber or 9 millimeter semiautomatic pistol. They are
currently limited to carrying a .38 or .357 caliber revolver.
9 The original bill had extended the availability of the
additional weaponry to security officers only.
