2 A resolution recognizing March 23, 2005, as
3 "FAMU Day."

5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida A&M
6 University (FAMU) is the oldest coeducational, land-grant
7 institution of higher learning in the State University System,
8 and
9 WHEREAS, FAMU was founded in 1887, named a land-grant
10 institution in 1891, and designated a university in 1953, and
11 WHEREAS, FAMU is a 4-year, historically black
12 university, offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral
13 programs, which seeks qualified students from all racial,
14 ethnic, religious, and national groups, and
15 WHEREAS, FAMU provides immeasurable educational
16 opportunities that enhance the quality of life for young men
17 and women, and
18 WHEREAS, the university's academic components consists
19 of 13 colleges and schools and two institutes: Arts and
20 Sciences, Education, Engineering Sciences, Technology and
21 Agriculture, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,
22 Engineering, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Business
23 and Industry, General Studies, Journalism and Graphic
24 Communication, Nursing, Law, Graduate Studies and Research,
25 the Environmental Sciences Institute, and the Institute of
26 Public Health, and
27 WHEREAS, FAMU offers undergraduate and graduate
28 programs that are designed to meet the needs of a diverse
29 population of students, awarding baccalaureate degrees in 63
30 disciplines, master's degrees in 36 disciplines, and the
31 doctor of philosophy degree in 11 disciplines - educational

1 leadership; environmental science; biomedical, chemical,
2 civil, electrical, industrial, and mechanical engineering;
3 pharmacy; physics; and entomology in cooperation with the
4 University of Florida - and two professional degrees in law
5 and pharmacy, and
6 WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans
7 with baccalaureate degrees, the top producer of black
8 educators, and one of the top recruiters of National Merit
9 Scholars in the country, and its College of Pharmacy and
10 Pharmaceutical Sciences was ranked first in the southeast and
11 third nationwide in funding by National Institute of Health,
12 and
13 WHEREAS, FAMU won the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge
14 Team Championships in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2003, and
15 WHEREAS, the Marching "100" participated in the
16 pre-game show, performing before more than 79,000 fans, at
17 Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, Florida, and
18 WHEREAS, the FAMU Women's Volleyball Team won the 2004
19 MEAC Championship and was ranked No. 25 in the nation in
20 Division I, head coach Tony Trifonov earned MEAC Coach of the
21 Year and Outstanding Tournament Coach honors, and FAMU had
22 four players named to the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
23 All-Star first team and four players named to the MEAC
24 All-Team Tournament, NOW, THEREFORE,

26 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

28 That the Senate recognizes March 23, 2005, as "FAMU
29 Day" in Tallahassee, in recognition of Florida Agricultural
30 and Mechanical University's contributions as an outstanding
31 institution of higher education.

1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
2 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr.
3 Castell Vaughn Bryant, Interim President of Florida
4 Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible token of
5 the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
