  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution commemorating the Pontian Greek

  3         Genocide of 1914 to 1922.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, from 1914 to 1922, the Ottoman Turks directed

  6  the genocide of 353,000 Greeks living in Pontus and forced an

  7  equal number to flee their homeland, and

  8         WHEREAS, today we solemnly recognize and remember the

  9  victims of this devastating event in the hope that their

10  memories can serve as the conscience of the world, and

11         WHEREAS, it is fitting to emphasize the importance for

12  all civilized nations to remain vigilant against tyranny to

13  ensure that such atrocities will never again be committed, and

14         WHEREAS, it is also fitting to pay tribute to the

15  survivors and offer thanks to them and their descendants for

16  the many enriching contributions they have made to our culture

17  and our way of life in this state and this nation, NOW,

18  THEREFORE,

20  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

21  

22         That the Pontian Greek Genocide of 1914 to 1922 is

23  commemorated and the Pontian Greek people are commended for

24  their significant contributions to civilization.
