  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing April 20, 2005, as

  3         "University of South Florida Day."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, the University of South Florida is a

  6  multicampus system of higher education with campuses in Tampa,

  7  St. Petersburg, Sarasota, and Lakeland, serving over 42,500

  8  students in 230 undergraduate and graduate degree programs,

  9  and

10         WHEREAS, the University of South Florida boasts

11  approximately 190,000 alumni, with 90,000 Proud Bulls calling

12  the Tampa Bay area "home," and

13         WHEREAS, USF plays a role in improving nearly every

14  aspect of Florida's communities, from its College of

15  Education, which trains more teachers than any other

16  university, to its medical doctors, which serve more than

17  1,000 patients per day in 345 locations, and

18         WHEREAS, USF ranks fifth in the nation among the

19  fastest-growing universities in terms of funding from the

20  National Institutes of Health and conducts over $290 million

21  annually in national-caliber research that tackles Florida's

22  toughest issues, including research in robotics and

23  biodefense, health care, aging, education, the environment,

24  and many other areas, and

25         WHEREAS, USF is an engine for economic development in

26  Tampa Bay and throughout the State of Florida, especially in

27  bioscience and high-technology, with the USF Center for

28  Entrepreneurship ranked number one in the nation last year for

29  life-sciences entrepreneurship, and

30         WHEREAS, USF's Research Park and business partnership

31  programs develop new technologies, spawn new business, provide

 1  direct assistance to existing companies, and educate a highly

 2  skilled workforce, and

 3         WHEREAS, USF, the only Division I-A University serving

 4  more than 3.5 million people in the region, will join the Big

 5  East this Fall, bringing intercollegiate sports to a new level

 6  of excitement in Bulls Country, and

 7         WHEREAS, USF is poised to move into the top 50 of

 8  public research universities within the next 5 years under the

 9  leadership of President Judy Genshaft, NOW, THEREFORE,

10  

11  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

12  

13         That the Florida Senate proudly recognizes Wednesday,

14  April 20, 2005, as "University of South Florida Day" at the

15  Capitol.
