  1                    Senate Resolution No. ____

  2         A resolution recognizing Lance Corporal Tony

  3         Stevens on his completion of his second tour of

  4         duty in Iraq.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Tony Stevens of the U.S. Marine

  7  Corps' 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment has served two tours

  8  of duty in Iraq and, remarkably, survived 10 separate bomb

  9  attacks in the "triangle of death" south of Baghdad, and

10         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Stevens's deployment placed him

11  in an area known for insurgents' use of what the U.S. military

12  calls "improvised explosive devices," which include car bombs

13  and bombs placed on and adjacent to roadways, and

14         WHEREAS, these bombs contribute to an injury rate of

15  one in five Marines during their 6-month tours of duty in this

16  area, and Lance Corporal Stevens's survival of 10 such

17  explosions is considered a record, and

18         WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Stevens is a graduate of

19  Keystone Heights High School where he was an outstanding

20  athlete, and he was named Florida Class 3A High School

21  Basketball Player of the Year in 1997, and

22         WHEREAS, after being drafted by the Minnesota Twins, he

23  was playing for the Twins' Double-A New Britain, Connecticut,

24  Rock Cats when the 9/11 attack led to his enlistment in the

25  U.S. Marine Corps, and

26         WHEREAS, those who personally know Lance Corporal Tony

27  Stevens comment frequently on his courage, leadership

28  qualities, sense of perspective, and concern for others,

29  qualities that have served him and his fellow soldiers well as

30  they serve our country in Iraq, NOW, THEREFORE,

 3         That the Senate recognizes and commends Lance Corporal

 4  Tony Stevens on his enlistment in the Marine Corps and his

 5  courageous service to our country.
