2 A resolution recognizing October 2005 as
3 "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida.

5 WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer
6 diagnosed in women in the nation, and
7 WHEREAS, Florida ranks third in the nation for total
8 number of new breast cancer cases and deaths from breast
9 cancer, and
10 WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer and
11 the single most important risk factor is age, such that breast
12 cancers predominantly occur in women age 50 and older, and the
13 risk increases with age until age 80, and
14 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that
15 more than 13,430 new cases of invasive breast cancer in
16 Florida will be diagnosed, and approximately 2,570 women will
17 die of the disease during the year 2005, and
18 WHEREAS, a woman living in Florida has a one in seven
19 chance of developing breast cancer, and
20 WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cause
21 of cancer death in white women and the number one cause of
22 cancer death among African-American women, and
23 WHEREAS, early detection, through routine clinical
24 examinations and mammography screening beginning at age 40 in
25 compliance with the American Cancer Society's recommended
26 guidelines, is the key to detecting breast cancer at the
27 earliest stages, and
28 WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer, if
29 the disease is found in its earliest stages, is 98 percent,
30 but drops to 26 percent if the cancer is detected late, in a
31 stage of metastases, and

1 WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of October
2 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer awareness
3 programs, such as the American Cancer Society's Reach to
4 Recovery Program, promotes early breast cancer detection
5 through regular screening, NOW, THEREFORE,
6
7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That the month of October 2005 is recognized as "Breast
10 Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and all women are urged to
11 understand the risks associated with breast cancer, to take
12 preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to undergo early
13 detection procedures, such as mammography, in compliance with
14 the American Cancer Society's recommended guidelines for
15 breast cancer screening.
