  2         A resolution recognizing Congressman William

  3         "Bill" Marx Lehman, 1913-2005.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, William "Bill" Marx Lehman was born on October

  6  5, 1913, in Selma, Alabama, and

  7         WHEREAS, Bill Lehman had a privileged childhood, but

  8  realized early on that the world was filled with those less

  9  fortunate than himself and saw first-hand the good things that

10  government could facilitate in their lives, and

11         WHEREAS, in the 1930's Bill Lehman graduated from the

12  University of Alabama, moved to Miami, Florida, married Joan

13  Feibelman in 1939, and spent 30 years selling used cars, then

14  spent a short time as a school teacher, and

15         WHEREAS, Bill Lehman, a Democrat, first became involved

16  in politics when he ran and was elected to the Dade County

17  School Board in 1966, became chairman of the board in 1971,

18  and was first elected to Congress in 1972, and

19         WHEREAS, Congressman Lehman represented Dade County for

20  20 years in the United States House of Representatives and was

21  a member of the very influential Florida delegation that

22  brought to South Florida billions of dollars in federal aid,

23  especially in the area of transportation, and

24         WHEREAS, the highlights of Congressman Lehman's

25  political career included serving as the Chairman of the

26  powerful Subcommittee on Transportation Appropriations,

27  advocating on behalf of Haitian refugees, and smuggling a

28  synthetic heart valve to a young patient in the Soviet Union,

29  and

30         WHEREAS, Congressman Lehman became a role model for

31  countless young people, including Florida Senator Dave

 1  Aronberg, who served as his Congressional Page as a teenager

 2  in the 100th Congress and always strove to "make him proud,"

 3  NOW, THEREFORE,

 5  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 7         That the Florida Senate recognizes not only the

 8  exemplary life that Congressman Bill Lehman led, but also

 9  recognizes the unforgettable legacy that he leaves behind.
