8Education to review the Sunshine State Standards and
9report the extent to which the standards are being taught;
10amending s. 1001.41, F.S.; requiring district school
11boards to adopt policies to provide each student a
12complete education program; providing an effective date.

14Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
15
16     Section 1.  Subsection (1) of section 1001.03, Florida
17Statutes, is amended to read:
18     1001.03  Specific powers of State Board of Education.--
19     (1)  PUBLIC K-12 STUDENT PERFORMANCE STANDARDS.--The State
20Board of Education shall approve the student performance
21standards known as the Sunshine State Standards in key academic
22subject areas and grade levels. The state board shall
23periodically review the standards to ensure adequate rigor and
24evaluate the extent to which the standards are being taught at
25each grade level. The evaluation shall be provided to the
26Governor, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the
27President of the Senate and shall include a determination of the
28district school boards' provision of a complete education
29program pursuant to s. 1001.41(3).
30     Section 2.  Subsection (3) of section 1001.41, Florida
31Statutes, is amended to read:
32     1001.41  General powers of district school board.--The
33district school board, after considering recommendations
34submitted by the district school superintendent, shall exercise
35the following general powers:
36     (3)  Prescribe and adopt standards and policies to provide
37each student the opportunity to receive a complete education
38program, including language arts, mathematics, science, social
39studies, health, physical education, foreign languages, and the
40arts as defined by the Sunshine State Standards pursuant to s.
411001.03(1) as are considered desirable by it for improving the
42district school system.
43     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2005.
