5(g)(f)  The history of the Holocaust (1933-1945), the
6systematic, planned annihilation of European Jews and other
7groups by Nazi Germany, a watershed event in the history of
8humanity, to be taught in a manner that leads to an
9investigation of human behavior, an understanding of the
10ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping, and an
11examination of what it means to be a responsible and respectful
12person, for the purposes of encouraging tolerance of diversity
13in a pluralistic society and for nurturing and protecting
14democratic values and institutions.
15     (h)(g)  The history of African Americans, including the
16history of African peoples before the political conflicts that
17led to the development of slavery, the passage to America, the
18enslavement experience, abolition, and the contributions of
19African Americans to society.
20     (i)(h)  The elementary principles of agriculture.
21     (j)(i)  The true effects of all alcoholic and intoxicating
22liquors and beverages and narcotics upon the human body and
23mind.
24     (k)(j)  Kindness to animals.
25     (k)  The history of the state.
26     (l)(l)  The conservation of natural resources.
27     (m)(m)  Comprehensive health education that addresses
28concepts of community health; consumer health; environmental
29health; family life, including an awareness of the benefits of
30sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences
31of teenage pregnancy; mental and emotional health; injury
32prevention and safety; nutrition; personal health; prevention
33and control of disease; and substance use and abuse.
34     (n)(n)  Such additional materials, subjects, courses, or
35fields in such grades as are prescribed by law or by rules of
36the State Board of Education and the district school board in
37fulfilling the requirements of law.
38     (o)(o)  The study of Hispanic contributions to the United
39States.
40     (p)(p)  The study of women's contributions to the United
41States.
42     (q)  The nature and importance of free enterprise to the
43United States economy.
44     (r)(q)  A character-development program in the elementary
45schools, similar to Character First or Character Counts, which
46is secular in nature and stresses such character qualities as
47attentiveness, patience, and initiative. Beginning in school
48year 2004-2005, the character-development program shall be
49required in kindergarten through grade 12. Each district school
50board shall develop or adopt a curriculum for the character-
51development program that shall be submitted to the department
52for approval. The character-development curriculum shall stress
53the qualities of patriotism;, responsibility;, citizenship; the
54Golden Rule;, kindness;, respect for authority, human life,
55liberty, and personal property;, honesty; charity;, self-
56control;, racial, ethnic, and religious tolerance;, and
57cooperation.
58     (s)(r)  In order to encourage patriotism, the sacrifices
59that veterans have made in serving our country and protecting
60democratic values worldwide. Such instruction must occur on or
61before Veterans' Day and Memorial Day. Members of the
62instructional staff are encouraged to use the assistance of
63local veterans when practicable.
