| A resolution honoring the memory of former Miramar Mayor |
| Vicki Coceano. |
|
|
| WHEREAS, Vicki Coceano, fondly referred to as "Miss Vicki," |
| retired as Miramar's first female mayor in 1999 after serving in |
| that post for 10 growth-filled years that brought the city from |
| "a sleepy bedroom community with cow pastures and vast tracts of |
| empty land to a Broward boomtown," and |
| WHEREAS, the seeds of Miss Vicki's 22-year political career |
| were sown in 1960 when, frustrated at her futile attempts to |
| bring before the city's mayor her concerns regarding a |
| hurricane-damaged canal, she rallied the neighborhood and |
| marched on City Hall, a move that resulted in a restored canal |
| and, in 1974, in her becoming the first woman to chair Broward |
| County's Democratic Party, and |
| WHEREAS, in addition to her tenures on the city commission |
| and as mayor, Miss Vicki was active in local civic clubs and |
| organizations, served on numerous boards at state and county |
| levels, and was the recipient of many and varied recognitions |
| and honors, including having had a youth center and Miramar's |
| first post office named in her honor, and |
| WHEREAS, Vicki Coceano, who passed away on January 8, 2005, |
| at the age of 81, will be remembered as a firm, accomplished |
| leader, an outspoken politician, and a woman possessed of a |
| genuine love of people and a fierce commitment to her community |
| and her state, NOW, THEREFORE, |
|
|
| Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| Florida: |
|
|
| That the House of Representatives considers it a singular |
| privilege to honor the memory of former Miramar Mayor Vicki |
| Coceano and to recognize the accomplishments of a great lady. |
| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
| presented to Americo "Mike" Coceano, husband of Vicki Coceano, |
| as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein. |
