House Resolution
2A resolution designating March 2005 as "National Nutrition
3Month in Florida."

5     WHEREAS, the House of Representatives recognizes that the
6food we eat plays a vital role in our overall health and
7fitness, that diet-related diseases decrease the quality of life
8for millions of Americans in the United States each year, and
9that there is an epidemic of obesity in the State of Florida,
10and
11     WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Health has stated that
12the economic impact of excessive weight and obesity in the state
13is manifested in the toll of certain diseases that result in the
14expenditure of billions of dollars on the treatment of
15cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes alone, and the
16Federal Trade Commission has stated that consumers waste
17billions of dollars each year on unproven, fraudulently
18marketed, and potentially harmful products and treatments for
19obesity, and
20     WHEREAS, the Florida Secretary of Health is conducting a
21series of Obesity Summit meetings throughout the state, and
22     WHEREAS, the Surgeon General of the United States has
23issued a "call to action" to prevent and decrease the excessive
24weight and obesity that affect two-thirds of adults and 15
25percent of children and adolescents, and
26     WHEREAS, the United States Department of Health and Human
27Services' Healthy People 2010 Initiative cites nutrition and
28weight as a specific focus for improving America's health,
29listing 18 objectives for promoting health and reducing chronic
30diseases through proper diet and maintenance of healthy weight,
31and
32     WHEREAS, there remains a critical need for continuing
33nutrition education and a wide-scale effort to enhance healthy
34eating practices, NOW, THEREFORE,

36Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
37Florida:

39     That the House of Representatives designates March 2005 as
40"National Nutrition Month in Florida," urges the provision of
41increased education as to the prevention and treatment of
42obesity-related diseases, and encourages all Floridians to
43become more aware of the benefits of and the need for adopting
44good nutritional practices.
