House Resolution
2A resolution designating March 23, 2005, as "FAMU Day" in
3Tallahassee.

5     WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida Agricultural and
6Mechanical University (FAMU) is the oldest coeducational land-
7grant institution of higher learning in the State University
8System, and
9     WHEREAS, founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in
101891, and designated a university in 1953, FAMU is a four-year,
11historically black university offering undergraduate, graduate,
12and doctoral programs to qualified students from all racial,
13ethnic, religious, and national groups, and
14     WHEREAS, consisting of 13 colleges and schools and two
15institutes, FAMU offers undergraduate and graduate programs
16designed to meet the needs of a diverse population of students,
17awarding baccalaureate degrees in 63 disciplines; master's
18degrees in 36 disciplines; in cooperation with the University of
19Florida, the doctor of philosophy degree in 11 disciplines; and
20two professional degrees in law and pharmacy, and
21     WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans with
22baccalaureate degrees, the top producer of black educators, and
23one of the top recruiters of National Merit Scholars in the
24country; and its College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
25is first in the southeast and third nationwide in National
26Institutes of Health funding, and
27     WHEREAS, since 1991, FAMU has five times won the Honda
28Campus All-Star Challenge Team Championships; its Women's
29Volleyball Team earned the 2004 MEAC Championship and was ranked
3025th in the nation for Division 1; and four of its players were
31named to the All-Mid Eastern Atlantic Conference All-Star first
32team and four were named to the MEAC All-Team Tournament, and
33     WHEREAS, typifying the excellence of FAMU's programs, the
34university's renowned "Marching 100" performed before a rapt
35audience of more than 79,000 excited fans during the pre-game
36show of Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, NOW, THEREFORE,

38Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
39Florida:

41     That, in recognition of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical
42University's contributions as an outstanding institution of
43higher education, March 23, 2005, is enthusiastically designated
44as "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee.
45     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
46presented to Dr. Castell Vaughn Bryant, interim president of
47Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible
48token of the sentiments expressed herein.
