2	A resolution designating March 23, 2005, as "FAMU Day" in
3	Tallahassee.

5	WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida Agricultural and
6	Mechanical University (FAMU) is the oldest coeducational land-
7	grant institution of higher learning in the State University
8	System, and
9	WHEREAS, founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in
10	1891, and designated a university in 1953, FAMU is a four-year,
11	historically black university offering undergraduate, graduate,
12	and doctoral programs to qualified students from all racial,
13	ethnic, religious, and national groups, and
14	WHEREAS, consisting of 13 colleges and schools and two
15	institutes, FAMU offers undergraduate and graduate programs
16	designed to meet the needs of a diverse population of students,
17	awarding baccalaureate degrees in 63 disciplines; master's
18	degrees in 36 disciplines; in cooperation with the University of
19	Florida, the doctor of philosophy degree in 11 disciplines; and
20	two professional degrees in law and pharmacy, and
21	WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans with
22	baccalaureate degrees, the top producer of black educators, and
23	one of the top recruiters of National Merit Scholars in the
24	country; and its College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
25	is first in the southeast and third nationwide in National
26	Institutes of Health funding, and
27	WHEREAS, since 1991, FAMU has five times won the Honda
28	Campus All-Star Challenge Team Championships; its Women's
29	Volleyball Team earned the 2004 MEAC Championship and was ranked
30	25th in the nation for Division 1; and four of its players were
31	named to the All-Mid Eastern Atlantic Conference All-Star first
32	team and four were named to the MEAC All-Team Tournament, and
33	WHEREAS, typifying the excellence of FAMU's programs, the
34	university's renowned "Marching 100" performed before a rapt
35	audience of more than 79,000 excited fans during the pre-game
36	show of Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, NOW, THEREFORE,

38	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
39	Florida:

41	That, in recognition of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical
42	University's contributions as an outstanding institution of
43	higher education, March 23, 2005, is enthusiastically designated
44	as "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee.
45	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
46	presented to Dr. Castell Vaughn Bryant, interim president of
47	Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible
48	token of the sentiments expressed herein.
