2 | A resolution recognizing the City of Coconut Creek as the |
3 | "Butterfly Capital of the World." |

5 | WHEREAS, the City of Coconut Creek has long been an |
6 | advocate of conservation practices and of environmental |
7 | preservation and has long fostered the development of natural |
8 | wildlife habitats within its borders, and |
9 | WHEREAS, the city adopted the butterfly as its symbol in |
10 | 2002 to illustrate its commitment to the natural beauty of the |
11 | South Florida ecosystem, and |
12 | WHEREAS, the city has actively fostered the growth of its |
13 | butterfly population by educating its citizens on the practice |
14 | of butterfly gardening and its positive effects on the existing |
15 | environment, including the health of the ecosystem as well as |
16 | aesthetic benefits, and |
17 | WHEREAS, the city has conducted such education through |
18 | displays, production, and distribution of butterfly garden- |
19 | related literature and other instructional material; led the |
20 | practice of butterfly gardening through example, planting |
21 | butterfly gardens throughout Coconut Creek's public facilities; |
22 | cultivated a population of the rare Atala butterfly, which was |
23 | nearly rendered extinct in the 1970's; provided residents the |
24 | physical means to plant butterfly gardens, giving away hundreds |
25 | of butterfly-attracting plants to residents each Arbor Day; and |
26 | marketed itself as "Butterfly Capital of the World," |
27 | trademarking the title and adopting a butterfly design to use as |
28 | its identifying brand, and |
29 | WHEREAS, the City of Coconut Creek has established |
30 | butterfly-themed special events designed to involve the |
31 | community in the spirit of "Butterfly Capital of the World" such |
32 | as the Coconut Creek Butterfly Festival, a community event that |
33 | attracts more than 5,000 residents per year, and the annual |
34 | Coconut Creek Butterfly Run, a 5-K race that has become a |
35 | highlight of the South Florida running season, NOW, THEREFORE, |

37 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
38 | Florida: |

40 | That the City of Coconut Creek is recognized as the |
41 | "Butterfly Capital of the World" and is commended on its efforts |
42 | to advocate for the environment by assisting in the flourishing |
43 | of butterflies within the city's boundaries. |
44 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
45 | presented to the City of Coconut Creek as a tangible token of |
46 | the sentiments expressed herein. |
