House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the signing of the Scottish
3Declaration of Independence on April 6, 1320, and
4designating April 6, 2005, as "Florida Tartan Day."

6     WHEREAS, the American Declaration of Independence was
7modeled after the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath, and almost
8half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of
9Scottish descent, and
10     WHEREAS, Florida has a rich history of Scottish influence
11as reflected in the state's culture and in the names of many of
12its towns, cities, and counties, and
13     WHEREAS, no fewer than fourteen highland games and Celtic
14festivals are held each year throughout the state, and
15     WHEREAS, organizations in Florida that point to the
16influence and contributions of the Scottish people include the
17Scottish-American Societies, The St. Andrew's Societies, the
18Scottish-American Military Society, The Council of Scottish
19Clans and Associations, and the New World Celts, and
20     WHEREAS, Florida was the home of such famous residents of
21Scottish descent as Thomas Edison, Ernest Hemingway, Henry
22Flagler, Andrew Carnegie, and Native American Osceola, NOW,
23THEREFORE,

25Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
26Florida:

28     That the House of Representatives proudly recognizes the
29contributions made by the state's Scottish forebears and, in
30their honor, is pleased to designate April 6, 2005, as "Florida
31Tartan Day."
32     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
33presented to the New World Celts of Dunedin as a tangible token
34of the sentiments expressed herein.
