5 | WHEREAS, on February 27, 1843, the County of Hernando was |
6 | established and named after the Spanish explorer Hernando |
7 | DeSoto, and |
8 | WHEREAS, nestled in the central west coast of Florida north |
9 | of Tampa Bay, Hernando County was known to the Native Americans |
10 | as a Garden of Eden, and, with its vast rivers, lakes, and |
11 | streams, oyster beds, and inland forests, Hernando County was |
12 | truly a paradise, and |
13 | WHEREAS, as part of the nine-county Nature Coast, Hernando |
14 | County boasts mild temperatures that are ideal for year-round |
15 | outdoor recreation where hunting, fishing, camping, paddling, |
16 | birding, and hiking are just a few of the numerous recreational |
17 | opportunities enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, and |
18 | WHEREAS, Hernando County's vast tracts of public land have |
19 | been preserved, including the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife |
20 | Refuge, the Chinsegut Hill National Wildlife Refuge, the |
21 | Withlacoochee State Forest, the Weeki Wachee Preserve, and the |
22 | PK Ranch, and |
23 | WHEREAS, construction, dairy and cattle production, health |
24 | care, manufacturing, tourism, electronics, forest resources, and |
25 | lime rock mining help to fuel the local economy, and |
26 | WHEREAS, the community's vision of growth for the 478.3 |
27 | square miles that make up Hernando County includes the "Close to |
28 | Home, Room to Roam" philosophy for this transitioning suburban- |
29 | rural county, NOW, THEREFORE, |

31 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |

34 | That March 31, 2005, is recognized as "Hernando County Day" |
35 | in Tallahassee. |
