| 5 | WHEREAS, what began as one man's personal statement in the |
| 6 | fight against cancer has led to the development of a worldwide |
| 7 | event to help banish cancer, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid |
| 9 | runner, took the first step of his 24-hour trek around a track |
| 10 | in Tacoma, Washington, in May 1985 and ultimately clocked 83 |
| 11 | miles, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society, |
| 12 | and |
| 13 | WHEREAS, in 1986, 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr. |
| 14 | Klatt for this overnight event, and the American Cancer Society |
| 15 | Relay For Life was born, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, Relay For Life, which in the last 20 years has |
| 17 | spread to more than 4,100 communities in the United States and |
| 18 | 13 foreign countries, is the American Cancer Society's signature |
| 19 | event, offering everyone a chance to participate in the fight |
| 20 | against cancer in his or her local community, and |
| 21 | WHEREAS, the power of Relay For Life lies in its affording |
| 22 | a community an opportunity to grieve for those lost to cancer |
| 23 | and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived, while |
| 24 | embracing the hope that one day this dread disease will be |
| 25 | extinguished, and |
| 26 | WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer |
| 27 | Society annually hosts a Relay For Life event in more than 260 |
| 28 | communities across the state, which in 2004 raised more than $14 |
| 29 | million towards the eradication of the disease, NOW, THEREFORE, |
| 30 |

| 31 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 32 | Florida: |

| 34 | That the House of Representatives recognizes the year 2005 |
| 35 | as the 20th anniversary year of the American Cancer Society |
| 36 | Relay For Life, the society's signature cancer-fighting event, |
| 37 | and urges all Floridians to join their local community members |
| 38 | in the fight against cancer. |
