House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the 20th anniversary year of the
3American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

5     WHEREAS, what began as one man's personal statement in the
6fight against cancer has led to the development of a worldwide
7event to help banish cancer, and
8     WHEREAS, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid
9runner, took the first step of his 24-hour trek around a track
10in Tacoma, Washington, in May 1985 and ultimately clocked 83
11miles, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society,
12and
13     WHEREAS, in 1986, 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr.
14Klatt for this overnight event, and the American Cancer Society
15Relay For Life was born, and
16     WHEREAS, Relay For Life, which in the last 20 years has
17spread to more than 4,100 communities in the United States and
1813 foreign countries, is the American Cancer Society's signature
19event, offering everyone a chance to participate in the fight
20against cancer in his or her local community, and
21     WHEREAS, the power of Relay For Life lies in its affording
22a community an opportunity to grieve for those lost to cancer
23and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived, while
24embracing the hope that one day this dread disease will be
25extinguished, and
26     WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
27Society annually hosts a Relay For Life event in more than 260
28communities across the state, which in 2004 raised more than $14
29million towards the eradication of the disease, NOW, THEREFORE,

31Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
32Florida:

34     That the House of Representatives recognizes the year 2005
35as the 20th anniversary year of the American Cancer Society
36Relay For Life, the society's signature cancer-fighting event,
37and urges all Floridians to join their local community members
38in the fight against cancer.
