2	A resolution recognizing the 20th anniversary year of the
3	American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

5	WHEREAS, what began as one man's personal statement in the
6	fight against cancer has led to the development of a worldwide
7	event to help banish cancer, and
8	WHEREAS, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid
9	runner, took the first step of his 24-hour trek around a track
10	in Tacoma, Washington, in May 1985 and ultimately clocked 83
11	miles, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society,
12	and
13	WHEREAS, in 1986, 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr.
14	Klatt for this overnight event, and the American Cancer Society
15	Relay For Life was born, and
16	WHEREAS, Relay For Life, which in the last 20 years has
17	spread to more than 4,100 communities in the United States and
18	13 foreign countries, is the American Cancer Society's signature
19	event, offering everyone a chance to participate in the fight
20	against cancer in his or her local community, and
21	WHEREAS, the power of Relay For Life lies in its affording
22	a community an opportunity to grieve for those lost to cancer
23	and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived, while
24	embracing the hope that one day this dread disease will be
25	extinguished, and
26	WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
27	Society annually hosts a Relay For Life event in more than 260
28	communities across the state, which in 2004 raised more than $14
29	million towards the eradication of the disease, NOW, THEREFORE,

31	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
32	Florida:

34	That the House of Representatives recognizes the year 2005
35	as the 20th anniversary year of the American Cancer Society
36	Relay For Life, the society's signature cancer-fighting event,
37	and urges all Floridians to join their local community members
38	in the fight against cancer.
