House Resolution
2A resolution honoring United States Army Sergeant First
3Class Paul R. Smith.

5     WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant First Class Paul R.
6Smith, well-known among his fellow soldiers as a strong,
7exceptional leader who "led from the front," served his country
8with great valor and honor as a respected member of Company B,
911th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, of the United
10States Army, and
11     WHEREAS, Sgt. 1st Class Smith was a Florida resident,
12having been raised in Tampa, and his wife and children currently
13reside in Holiday, Florida, and
14     WHEREAS, during battle on April 4, 2003, as Sgt. 1st Class
15Smith and his fellow soldiers, although significantly
16outnumbered, fought with great determination to protect the
17lives and positions of other soldiers in the area, Sgt. 1st
18Class Smith repeatedly exposed himself to overwhelming enemy
19fire until he was fatally wounded, and
20     WHEREAS, for actions above and beyond the call of duty,
21Sgt. 1st Class Smith has been posthumously awarded the
22Congressional Medal of Honor in recognition of his heroic
23actions on April 4, 2003, and
24     WHEREAS, Sgt. 1st Class Smith's sacrificial conduct
25epitomizes the extraordinary character and selfless nature of
26our nation's fighting forces, NOW, THEREFORE,

28Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
29Florida:

31     That the House of Representatives recognizes the late
32United States Army Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith with
33untold gratitude, admiration, and honor for the ultimate
34sacrifice he made on behalf of his country.
35     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
36presented to the family of United States Army Sergeant First
37Class Paul R. Smith as a tangible token of the sentiments
38expressed herein.
