5 | WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant First Class Paul R. |
6 | Smith, well-known among his fellow soldiers as a strong, |
7 | exceptional leader who "led from the front," served his country |
8 | with great valor and honor as a respected member of Company B, |
9 | 11th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, of the United |
10 | States Army, and |
11 | WHEREAS, Sgt. 1st Class Smith was a Florida resident, |
12 | having been raised in Tampa, and his wife and children currently |
13 | reside in Holiday, Florida, and |
14 | WHEREAS, during battle on April 4, 2003, as Sgt. 1st Class |
15 | Smith and his fellow soldiers, although significantly |
16 | outnumbered, fought with great determination to protect the |
17 | lives and positions of other soldiers in the area, Sgt. 1st |
18 | Class Smith repeatedly exposed himself to overwhelming enemy |
19 | fire until he was fatally wounded, and |
20 | WHEREAS, for actions above and beyond the call of duty, |
21 | Sgt. 1st Class Smith has been posthumously awarded the |
22 | Congressional Medal of Honor in recognition of his heroic |
23 | actions on April 4, 2003, and |
24 | WHEREAS, Sgt. 1st Class Smith's sacrificial conduct |
25 | epitomizes the extraordinary character and selfless nature of |
26 | our nation's fighting forces, NOW, THEREFORE, |

28 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
29 | Florida: |

31 | That the House of Representatives recognizes the late |
32 | United States Army Sergeant First Class Paul R. Smith with |
33 | untold gratitude, admiration, and honor for the ultimate |
34 | sacrifice he made on behalf of his country. |
35 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
36 | presented to the family of United States Army Sergeant First |
37 | Class Paul R. Smith as a tangible token of the sentiments |
38 | expressed herein. |
