House Resolution
2A resolution designating May 15-21, 2005, as "Hurricane
3Preparedness Week" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, Florida is the most hurricane-vulnerable state in
6the nation, and
7     WHEREAS, the greatest threat to life and property in
8Florida is storm surge and inland flooding, and high winds and
9tornados can affect the entire state, including inland and
10coastal areas, and
11     WHEREAS, in 2004, Florida experienced the most active
12hurricane season in its recent history, with five named storms
13causing 123 fatalities and creating damage totaling more than
14$42 billion, and
15     WHEREAS, it is vital that the state's citizenry and
16numerous visitors remain aware of the potential hazards posed by
17the occurrence of a hurricane, and
18     WHEREAS, an accurate knowledge of hurricanes and timely
19forecasting are among the best methods of protection for the
20public, and
21     WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of Florida's citizens
22that they take personal responsibility for the safety of
23themselves and their families and property by developing a
24disaster preparedness plan based upon their own needs, NOW,
25THEREFORE,

27Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28Florida:

30     That the House of Representatives designates May 15-21,
312005, as "Hurricane Preparedness Week" in Florida, urges all
32residents to increase their knowledge and awareness of the
33hazards associated with hurricanes, and encourages individuals
34and families to take stock of their disaster supply kits and to
35replenish their supplies on Action Day, May 21, 2005.
36     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Florida's K-12 schools are
37encouraged to educate their students on the importance of a
38family hurricane preparedness plan and to provide educational
39materials for such use.
