A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to the Hillsborough County School
3District; providing for a seven-member district school
4board, with five members elected from single-member
5residence areas and two members elected from the district
6at large; providing for reapportionment; providing that
7elections shall be held in accordance with general law;
8repealing chapter 98-465, Laws of Florida, relating to the
9calling of a referendum to authorize such a district
10school board, to conform; providing an effective date.

12Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14     Section 1.  (1)  Consistent with the referendum held in
15Hillsborough County on November 3, 1998, and with the consent of
16the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division,
17dated January 24, 2000, the governing body of the District
18School Board of Hillsborough County shall consist of seven
19members, five of whom shall be elected from single-member
20residence areas and two of whom shall be elected from the
21district at large, as provided in this act.
22     (2)  Two seats shall be filled from the district at large,
23and five seats shall be filled from single-member residence
24areas that are designated District 1, District 2, District 3,
25District 4, and District 5, respectively. The single-member
26residence areas shall be reapportioned by the district school
27board by resolution, in consultation with the county supervisor
28of elections, in the odd-numbered year immediately following
29each decennial census in accordance with section 1001.36(2),
30Florida Statutes, and applied to the election held the following
31year.
32     Section 2.  The election of members of the district school
33board shall be conducted in accordance with general law.
34     Section 3.  Chapter 98-465, Laws of Florida, is repealed.
35     Section 4.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
