  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Willard Cooper, Putnam

  3         County high school football coach.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Willard Cooper, who coached for a total of 18

  6  years, 13 years with Central Academy and 5 years with Central

  7  High, and was twice named Big 9 East Coach of the Year,

  8  remains one of the longest-serving football coaches in Putnam

  9  County, and

10         WHEREAS, "Hey, Bulldog!" will forever be recalled

11  affectionately as the standard greeting used by Coach Cooper

12  to players and students alike, and

13         WHEREAS, Coach Cooper's expert coaching skills enabled

14  him to develop the talents of a number of his students,

15  including David Daniels, who won a football scholarship to

16  Florida A&M University and went on to play with the Oakland

17  Raiders; Grady Smith, who later excelled as a runner at

18  Florida A&M University and set a world track record; and

19  Horace Jefferson, a three-sport star, who has coached

20  basketball at St. Johns River Community College since 1994,

21  and

22         WHEREAS, Coach Cooper's wisdom, outstanding character,

23  and exceptional determination enabled him to guide and inspire

24  his team members and many other students through the difficult

25  years of desegregation, and

26         WHEREAS, Willard Cooper not only taught young people

27  lessons in the game of football, but more importantly taught

28  them lessons in the game of life, earning him the respect and

29  admiration of all who know him, NOW, THEREFORE,

31  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 1         That the Senate honors Willard Cooper, a cherished

 2  member of his community who, through his work as a high school

 3  football coach, dedicated his career to improving the lives of
