2 An act relating to tuition waivers; amending s.
3 1009.26, F.S.; requiring state universities and
4 community colleges to waive tuition for a
5 recipient of a Purple Heart or other combat
6 decoration superior in precedence who fulfills
7 specified criteria; providing a percentage cap
8 on the number of required credit hours for
9 which a tuition waiver may be received;
10 providing an effective date.

12 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14 Section 1. Subsection (9) is added to section 1009.26,
15 Florida Statutes, to read:
16 1009.26 Fee waivers.--
17 (9) A state university or community college shall
18 waive undergraduate tuition for each recipient of a Purple
19 Heart or another combat decoration superior in precedence who:
20 (a) Is enrolled as a full-time, part-time, or
21 summer-school student in an undergraduate program that
22 terminates in a degree or certificate;
23 (b) Is currently, and was at the time of the military
24 action that resulted in the awarding of the Purple Heart or
25 other combat decoration superior in precedence, a resident of
26 this state; and
27 (c) Submits to the state university or the community
28 college the DD-214 form issued at the time of separation from
29 service as documentation that the student has received a
30 Purple Heart or another combat decoration superior in
31 precedence.

2 Such a waiver for a Purple Heart recipient or recipient of
3 another combat decoration superior in precedence shall be
4 applicable for 110 percent of the number of required credit
5 hours of the degree or certificate program for which the
6 student is enrolled.
7 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2006.
