6An act relating to immunizations; amending s. 1003.22,
7F.S.; requiring each district school board and the
8governing authority of each private school to provide
9information to parents concerning meningococcal disease
10and the vaccine therefor; requiring the Department of
11Health to adopt rules specifying the age or grade level of
12students for whom such information will be provided;
13requiring each district school board and the governing
14authority of each private school to determine the means
15and method for the provision of information to parents
16concerning meningococcal disease; providing an effective
17date.

19Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
20
21     Section 1.  Paragraph (c) is added to subsection (10) of
22section 1003.22, Florida Statutes, to read:
23     1003.22  School-entry health examinations; immunization
24against communicable diseases; exemptions; duties of Department
25of Health.--
26     (10)  Each district school board and the governing
27authority of each private school shall:
28     (c)  Provide detailed information concerning the causes,
29symptoms, and transmission of meningococcal disease; the risks
30associated with meningococcal disease; and the availability,
31effectiveness, and known contraindications of any required or
32recommended vaccine against meningococcal disease to every
33student's parent, in accordance with the recommended ages of
34students determined by the Department of Health to be
35appropriate for the administration of such vaccine. The
36Department of Health shall adopt rules that specify the age or
37grade level of students for whom such information shall be
38provided, consistent with the recommendations of the Advisory
39Committee on Immunization Practices of the United States Centers
40for Disease Control and Prevention concerning the appropriate
41age for the administration of the vaccine, and shall make
42available information concerning the causes, symptoms, and
43transmission of meningococcal disease; the risks associated with
44meningococcal disease; and the availability, effectiveness, and
45known contraindications of any required or recommended vaccine
46against meningococcal disease to school districts and the
47governing authorities of each private school. Each district
48school board and the governing authority of each private school
49shall determine the means and methods for the provision of such
50information to students' parents.
51     Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2006.
