| 6 | An act relating to student voter education; authorizing |
| 7 | district school boards and county supervisors of elections |
| 8 | to cooperate to provide a program of voter education for |
| 9 | high school seniors; providing guidelines for the content |
| 10 | of the educational program; requiring that the program of |
| 11 | voter education be conducted during school hours; |
| 12 | providing an effective date. |

| 14 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 15 |
|
| 16 | Section 1. (1) Each district school board and county |
| 17 | supervisor of elections may cooperate to provide voter education |
| 18 | to high school students who are in grade 12. The voter education |
| 19 | may be in the form of a presentation and is voluntary for public |
| 20 | high schools and nonpublic high schools. Each supervisor of |
| 21 | elections may conduct the presentation for the public high |
| 22 | schools and, upon request, for the nonpublic high schools. |
| 23 | (2) If provided, the voter education must include |
| 24 | information concerning: |
| 25 | (a) How to register and preregister to vote. |
| 26 | (b) The operation of voting machines. |
| 27 | (c) How, when, and where to vote. |
| 28 | (d) The importance of voting. |
| 29 | (3) If provided, the voter education program must provide |
| 30 | students with the opportunity, sufficient information, and |
| 31 | sufficient time to complete and hand in to the supervisor of |
| 32 | elections applications for voter registration. |
| 33 | (4) If provided, the voter education program shall be |
| 34 | conducted during school hours each term of the school year in |
| 35 | order to reach a maximum number of students in the most |
| 36 | effective and efficient manner. |
| 37 | (5) If voter education is provided, a student may not be |
| 38 | excluded from the voter education program due to an irregular |
| 39 | class schedule, and students enrolled in a magnet school must be |
| 40 | provided the same opportunity for voter education. |
| 41 | Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2006. |
