  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to public K-12 educational

  3         instruction; creating s. 1003.4205, F.S.;

  4         requiring the provision of instruction

  5         regarding sun safety and skin protection;

  6         providing requirements for such instruction;

  7         providing an effective date.

  8  

  9         WHEREAS, melanoma is the most common cancer in young

10  adults ages 25 to 29, and

11         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society found that fewer

12  than one-third of children ages 11 to 18 use any form of sun

13  protection, and

14         WHEREAS, more than 95,000 new cases of melanoma are

15  estimated for 2006, with melanoma-based deaths occurring at

16  the rate of one per hour, and

17         WHEREAS, Florida has the second highest incidence of

18  melanoma in the nation, NOW, THEREFORE,

19  

20  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

21  

22         Section 1.  Section 1003.4205, Florida Statutes, is

23  created to read:

24         1003.4205  Required instruction in sun safety and skin

25  protection.--

26         (1)  This section may be cited as the "K-12 Melanoma

27  Prevention Act."

28         (2)(a)  Each district school board shall make provision

29  for instruction regarding sun safety and skin protection

30  within the district school board's student progression plan.

31  Such instruction shall be offered at the elementary, middle,

 1  and secondary school levels. The instruction may be offered

 2  within courses in health, science, comprehensive health

 3  education, life management skills, or physical education. The

 4  instruction may be conveyed to students in print or

 5  electronically.

 6         (b)  Instruction regarding sun safety and skin

 7  protection shall include, but not be limited to, risk factors

 8  for melanoma, sources of ultraviolet rays, and measures to

 9  prevent skin cancer.

10         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

11  law.
