1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing and commending current
3 research on Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) and
4 calling this research to the attention of the
5 public.

7 WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are defects
8 existing at birth, and
9 WHEREAS, given growing familiarity with this disorder,
10 more diagnoses are being made of what was long thought to be a
11 very rare disorder and one for which there were few or no
12 solutions, and
13 WHEREAS, CHDs are now recognized to be among the most
14 common birth defects and are the leading cause of
15 birth-defect-related deaths, and
16 WHEREAS, too many babies and children born with CHDs
17 continue to die as a result of the severity of their heart
18 defect, the heart defect not being detected in time, a lack of
19 donor hearts, or failure of the medical intervention used, and
20 WHEREAS, more than 35,000 infants, 1 of every 125 to
21 150 infants, are born with heart defects in the United States
22 each year, and
23 WHEREAS, at least 35 different types of congenital
24 heart defects are now recognized, and numerous medical
25 scientists are researching the disorder in order to more
26 accurately understand its origin, physical signs and symptoms,
27 and surgical remedies, and
28 WHEREAS, the public should be made more aware of CHDs
29 so that early diagnosis and vigorous intervention will become
30 more likely, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
2
3 That the Florida Senate recognizes the significance of
4 new research on the origin, manifestations of, and potential
5 surgical remedies for Congenital Heart Defects; commends this
6 research in the interests of preserving the lives of newborns
7 and children; and urges that the public be informed of these
8 medical developments.
