    11-1160-06

  1 Senate Resolution

2 A resolution recognizing and commending current

3 research on Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) and

4 calling this research to the attention of the

  5 public.

  6

7 WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are defects

  8 existing at birth, and

9 WHEREAS, given growing familiarity with this disorder,

10 more diagnoses are being made of what was long thought to be a

11 very rare disorder and one for which there were few or no

12 solutions, and

13 WHEREAS, CHDs are now recognized to be among the most

14 common birth defects and are the leading cause of

15 birth-defect-related deaths, and

16 WHEREAS, too many babies and children born with CHDs

17 continue to die as a result of the severity of their heart

18 defect, the heart defect not being detected in time, a lack of

19 donor hearts, or failure of the medical intervention used, and

20 WHEREAS, more than 35,000 infants, 1 of every 125 to

21 150 infants, are born with heart defects in the United States

22 each year, and

23 WHEREAS, at least 35 different types of congenital

24 heart defects are now recognized, and numerous medical

25 scientists are researching the disorder in order to more

26 accurately understand its origin, physical signs and symptoms,

27 and surgical remedies, and

28 WHEREAS, the public should be made more aware of CHDs

29 so that early diagnosis and vigorous intervention will become

30 more likely, NOW, THEREFORE,
