18         1003.493  Career and professional academies.--
19         (1)  A career and professional academy is a
20  research-based program that integrates a rigorous academic
21  curriculum with an industry-driven career curriculum. Career
22  and professional academies may be offered by public schools,
23  school districts, or the Florida Virtual School. Students
24  completing career and professional academy programs receive a
25  standard high school diploma, the highest available industry
26  certification, and postsecondary credit if the academy
27  partners with a postsecondary institution.
28         (2)  The goals of career and professional academies are
29  to:
30         (a)  Increase student academic achievement and
31  graduation rates through integrated academic and career

Florida Senate - 2006 SENATOR AMENDMENT Bill No. CS for CS for SB 2048 Barcode 800942 1 curricula. 2 (b) Focus on career preparation through rigorous 3 academics and industry certification. 4 (c) Raise student aspiration and commitment to 5 academic achievement and work ethics. 6 (d) Support the revised graduation requirements 7 pursuant to s. 1003.428 by providing creative, applied majors. 8 (e) Promote acceleration mechanisms, such as dual 9 enrollment, articulated credit, or occupational completion 10 points, so that students may earn postsecondary credit while 11 in high school. 12 (f) Support the state's economy by meeting industry 13 needs for skilled employees in high-demand occupations. 14 (3) A career and professional academy may be offered 15 as one of the following small learning communities: 16 (a) A school-within-a-school career academy, as part 17 of an existing high school, that provides courses in one 18 occupational cluster. Students in the high school are not 19 required to be students in the academy. 20 (b) A total school configuration providing multiple 21 academies each structured around an occupational cluster. 22 Every student in the school is in an academy. 23 (4) Each career and professional academy must: 24 (a) Provide a rigorous standards-based academic 25 curriculum integrated with a career curriculum. The curriculum 26 must take into consideration multiple styles of student 27 learning; promote learning by doing through application and 28 adaptation; maximize relevance of the subject matter; enhance 29 each student's capacity to excel; and include an emphasis on 30 work habits and work ethics. 31 (b) Include one or more partnerships with 2 2:20 PM 05/01/06 s2048c2c-07-e0b

Such partnerships must 4 provide opportunities for: 5 1. Instruction from highly skilled professionals. 6 2. Internships, externships, and on-the-job training. 7 3. A postsecondary degree, diploma, or certificate. 8 4. The highest available level of industry 9 certification. Where no national or state certification 10 exists, school districts may establish a local certification 11 in conjunction with the local workforce development board, the 12 chamber of commerce, or the Agency for Workforce Innovation. 13 5. Maximum articulation of credits pursuant to s. 14 1007.23 upon program completion. 15 (c) Provide creative and tailored student advisement, 16 including parent participation and coordination with middle 17 schools to provide career exploration and education planning 18 as required under s. 1003.4156. Coordination with middle 19 schools must provide information to middle school students 20 about secondary and postsecondary career education programs 21 and academies. 22 (d) Provide a career education certification on the 23 high school diploma pursuant to s. 1003.431. 24 (e) Provide instruction in careers designated as high 25 growth, high demand, and high pay by the local workforce 26 development board, the chamber of commerce, or the Agency for 27 Workforce Innovation. 28 (f) Deliver academic content through instruction 29 relevant to the career, including intensive reading and 30 mathematics intervention required by s. 1003.428, with an 31 emphasis on strengthening reading for information skills. 3 2:20 PM 05/01/06 s2048c2c-07-e0b
Florida Senate - 2006 SENATOR AMENDMENT Bill No. CS for CS for SB 2048 Barcode 800942 1 (g) Provide instruction resulting in competency, 2 certification, or credentials in workplace skills, including, 3 but not limited to, communication skills, interpersonal 4 skills, decisionmaking skills, the importance of attendance 5 and timeliness in the work environment, and work ethics. 6 (h) Provide opportunities for students to obtain the 7 Florida Ready to Work Certification pursuant to s. 1004.99. 8 (i) Include an evaluation plan developed jointly with 9 the Department of Education.
