  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing March 23, 2006, as

  3         "FAMU Day in Tallahassee."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

  6  (FAMU) was founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in

  7  1891, and designated a university in 1953, and

  8         WHEREAS, FAMU is a 4-year, historically black

  9  university offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral

10  programs, which seeks qualified students from all racial,

11  ethnic, religious, and national groups, and

12         WHEREAS, FAMU has provided immeasurable educational

13  opportunities that enhance the quality of life for young men

14  and women, and

15         WHEREAS, FAMU's academic components consist of 13

16  colleges and schools and two institutes: Arts and Sciences;

17  Education; Engineering Sciences, Technology and Agriculture;

18  Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied

19  Health Sciences; Architecture; Business and Industry; General

20  Studies; Journalism and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law;

21  Graduate Studies and Research; Environmental Sciences

22  Institute; and the Institute of Public Health, and

23         WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans

24  holding baccalaureate degrees and degrees in business

25  management, marketing, and related services, and

26         WHEREAS, FAMU's School of Business and Industry's

27  Accounting team won first place in the 10th Annual Deloitte

28  Foundation National Student Case Study Seminar in 2005, and

29         WHEREAS, FAMU has repeatedly won the Honda Campus

30  All-Star Challenge Team Championship in 1991, 1996, 1998,

31  1999, 2003, and 2005, and

 1         WHEREAS, the University's radio station WANM 90.5,

 2  ranked No. 2 by the Princeton Review among the nation's

 3  college radio stations, and

 4         WHEREAS, 20 members of the "Marching 100" were invited

 5  to perform with rapper Kanye West and Comedian Jamie Foxx at

 6  the 48th Annual Grammys in Los Angeles, California, NOW,

 7  THEREFORE,

 8  

 9  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

10  

11         That the Florida Senate recognizes March 23, 2006, as

12  "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee, in recognition of Florida

13  Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions as an

14  outstanding institution of higher education.

15         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

16  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr.

17  Castell Vaughn Bryant, Interim President of Florida

18  Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible token of

19  the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
