1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing April 18, 2006, as
3 "University of South Florida Day."

5 WHEREAS, on December 18, 1956, the Fowler Avenue
6 property in Hillsborough County was approved as the site for
7 the new university that had been created by the Florida
8 Legislature in HB 1007, which became law on June 18, 1955, and
9 WHEREAS, USF opened as the first independent state
10 university conceived, planned, and built in the 20th century,
11 initially admitting 1,997 students, and
12 WHEREAS, USF has blossomed into a multi-campus Research
13 I Metropolitan Institution, with campuses in Hillsborough,
14 Pinellas, Sarasota-Manatee, and Polk Counties, and
15 WHEREAS, USF currently serves more than 43,000
16 students; offers over 7,000 courses leading to 88
17 Baccalaureate degrees, 87 Master's degrees, and 39 Ph.D.
18 degrees; and boasts more than 181,000 alumni, with over 90,000
19 of them living, working, and volunteering in the Tampa Bay
20 Area, and
21 WHEREAS, USF brings the force of a $3.2 billion annual
22 economic impact to the region it serves, and
23 WHEREAS, the USF Bulls are the Tampa Bay Region's
24 Division 1-A Home Team, bringing top-level competition to the
25 area as members of the Big East Conference, NOW, THEREFORE,

27 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

29 That the Florida Senate congratulates the University of
30 South Florida as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2006

1 and recognizes April 18 as "University of South Florida Day"
2 in the State Capitol and throughout the State of Florida.
3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
4 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the
5 President of the University of South Florida as a token of the
6 sentiments of the Florida Senate.
