  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Garret Johnson on his

  3         selection as a Rhodes Scholar.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Garrett Johnson, an outstanding

  6  scholar-athlete at Florida State University has been selected

  7  for a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, to

  8  begin in the fall of 2006, and

  9         WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson is widely known for his

10  accomplishments in track and field, was named USTCA Athlete of

11  the Week for his performance at the 2005 Florida

12  Intercollegiate Championships, placed second at the ACC Indoor

13  Championships, and earned All-American honors at the NCAA

14  Indoor National Championships in March 2005, and

15         WHEREAS, completing his collegiate education in just 3

16  years at Florida State University, Mr. Johnson graduated with

17  a double major in Political Science and English, earning a GPA

18  of 3.82, and entered the Master's program in Public

19  Administration in September 2005, and

20         WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson earned FSU's Golden Torch Award

21  for having the highest GPA of any member of the men's track

22  and field team, was named the 2005 Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sport

23  Scholar, and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Collegiate

24  Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars,

25  and

26         WHEREAS, simultaneously, with his graduate studies in

27  Public Administration, Mr. Johnson is also a legislative

28  assistant in the Governor's Office, where he serves on several

29  committees, including the Governor's Haiti Advisory Council

30  and has worked as the assistant to the director of the

31  Governor's Haiti Advisory Group, and

 1         WHEREAS, Garrett Johnson's exceptional accomplishments

 2  as a scholar-athlete are matched by his energetic dedication

 3  to public service, and his selection as a Rhodes Scholar

 4  brings well-deserved recognition to him and great distinction

 5  to this state, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That the Florida Senate applauds and commends the

10  excellence of Garrett Johnson's performance as a scholar and

11  an athlete and his valuable contributions to the legislative

12  and governmental process, and congratulates him on his

13  selection as a Rhodes Scholar.

14         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

15  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Garrett

16  Johnson as a token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
