  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing April 16-22, 2006, as

  3         "Alzheimer's Disease Initiative Week."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, there are 435,000 cases of probable

  6  Alzheimer's disease in Florida, and

  7         WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature created the

  8  Alzheimer's Disease Initiative in 1985 to help families

  9  dealing with Alzheimer's and related memory disorders by

10  providing a link between policy, research, and practice, and

11         WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Disease Initiative,

12  celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has grown into a

13  statewide network that includes 15 regional memory disorder

14  clinics that conduct research and training in a diagnostic and

15  therapeutic setting, and

16         WHEREAS, Alzheimer's Respite Care Programs are

17  established in all of Florida's 67 counties, and

18         WHEREAS, four model day-care programs have been

19  established in conjunction with memory disorder clinics to

20  test therapeutic interventions for individuals living with

21  memory disorders and to provide training for health care and

22  social service personnel, and

23         WHEREAS, the State of Florida Alzheimer's Disease Brain

24  Bank is a service and research-oriented network involved in a

25  variety of research activities, and

26         WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than 100,000

27  Floridians have received services from Alzheimer's Disease

28  Initiative programs during the last 10 years alone, and

29         WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Disease Advisory Committee has

30  taken a leadership role in developing policy recommendations

31  and best-practice models to help educate Florida's elders,

 1  caregivers, and health care professionals concerning critical

 2  issues affecting people with memory disorders, including an

 3  ethics-based policy on driver safety and progressive dementia,

 4  a protocol for dealing with behavioral challenges and

 5  catastrophic events in persons with dementia who are living in

 6  nursing homes, and recommendations for the specialized-care

 7  needs of persons with Alzheimer's and related memory disorders

 8  and their caregivers who are affected by natural disasters,

 9  and

10         WHEREAS, the dedicated partners and stakeholders in the

11  Alzheimer's Disease Initiative have been providing assistance

12  to people affected by Alzheimer's and related memory disorders

13  for more than 20 years, and

14         WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Disease Initiative was the

15  only program of its kind in the nation when it was created in

16  1985, and it is still the only program of its kind in the

17  nation today, NOW, THEREFORE,

19  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

20  

21         That the Senate recognizes the week of April 16-22,

22  2006, as "Alzheimer's Disease Initiative Week" in Florida.
