1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution honoring the Florida National
3 Guard and recognizing March 28, 2006, as
4 "Florida National Guard Day" in the State of
5 Florida.

7 WHEREAS, the Florida National Guard, as the military
8 arm of the Governor and the people of the great State of
9 Florida, has long stood ready to respond immediately in times
10 of domestic crisis or foreign war, and
11 WHEREAS, the Florida National Guard traces its roots
12 back to the first militia units of the United States, which
13 were formed in 1565 to protect St. Augustine, and
14 WHEREAS, more than 12,000 highly trained, skilled, and
15 dedicated men and women currently serve in the Florida
16 National Guard, 5,400 of them on active duty domestically and
17 elsewhere in the world as part of the Global War on Terrorism,
18 including the Florida Guard's 53rd Infantry Brigade, which is
19 deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq, and
20 WHEREAS, the balance of Florida's National Guard stands
21 in a constant state of readiness to support life and maintain
22 order in the state during natural disasters and other
23 unforeseeable crises, and
24 WHEREAS, throughout the arduous hurricane seasons of
25 2004 and 2005, the Florida National Guard demonstrated again
26 and again its vital capabilities and its dedication to the
27 residents of Florida, saving lives, bringing security to
28 devastated areas of the state, and helping people to manage
29 their lives in the midst of chaos, and also went to the aid of
30 the people of a devastated New Orleans following Hurricane
31 Katrina, and

1 WHEREAS, in troubled times such as ours, words cannot
2 convey our pride in the courageous work of the members of the
3 Florida National Guard, nor our gratitude for the sacrifices
4 made by these soldiers and their families, NOW, THEREFORE,
5
6 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
7
8 That the Senate salutes the soldier-citizens of the
9 Florida National Guard for their honorable and selfless
10 service to the people of our state and our country, and
11 recognizes March 28, 2006, as "Florida National Guard Day" in
12 the State of Florida.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
14 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Major
15 General Douglas Burnett, Adjutant General of Florida, as a
16 tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
