1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution commending The Links,
3 Incorporated, for its work in Florida.

5 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, is a highly respected
6 international organization of more than 10,000 professional,
7 accomplished, dedicated women of African ancestry in 274
8 chapters located in 42 states and three countries with a
9 mission and purpose of friendship and community service, and
10 WHEREAS, members of The Links are role models, mentors,
11 activists, and volunteers who work toward purposeful public
12 service with educational, cultural, and civic commitments
13 through four functional facets - International Trends and
14 Services, National Trends and Services, the Arts, and Services
15 to Youth, and
16 WHEREAS, the National Trends and Services facet of The
17 Links, Incorporated, also encompasses service related to three
18 Linkages including: Education; Health and Wellness; and
19 Legislative work that highlights and addresses concerns of the
20 organization in these areas and also impacts African-Americans
21 and society, and
22 WHEREAS, major issues and needs that concern the
23 Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated, include eliminating
24 health disparities in conformity with the federal Healthy
25 People 2010 program, which establishes national health
26 objectives designed to identify the most significant
27 preventable threats to the health of African-Americans, and
28 targeting six focus areas that disproportionately impact the
29 health of African-Americans - infant mortality, cancer,
30 cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and immunizations,

1 WHEREAS, Links from around the State of Florida have
2 assembled today to demonstrate their support for the Florida
3 Legislature's enactment of Healthy People 2010 legislation
4 promoting elimination of health disparities, to thank members
5 of the Florida Legislature for their wisdom and prudent action
6 in addressing health and wellness in terms of societal need,
7 and to encourage Legislators to monitor, implement and seek
8 progress through this important legislation, and
9 WHEREAS, Senator Frederica Wilson and Senator Mandy
10 Dawson are members of The Links, Incorporated, NOW, THEREFORE,
11
12 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
13
14 That this body does pause in its deliberations to pay
15 its respects to the dedicated efforts and example of the
16 Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated, led by Margaret
17 Thompson Johnson, in their successful campaign for the
18 advancement and accomplishment of equitable health care policy
19 and services for all Floridians, and to recognize the
20 exemplary value of their work toward increasing quality and
21 years of healthy life for the residents of this state.
