14 On page 80, line 9, through page 81, line 13, delete
15 those lines

17 and insert:
18 (1) The Department of Education shall contract with a
19 competitively selected public or private university to create
20 and operate the Florida Center for Mathematics and Science
21 Education Research. The purpose of the center shall be to
22 increase student achievement in science and mathematics, with
23 an emphasis on K-12 education. The center shall:
24 (a) Provide technical assistance and support to school
25 districts and schools in the development and implementation of
26 mathematics and science instruction.
27 (b) Conduct applied research on policy and practices
28 related to mathematics and science instruction and assessment
29 in the state.
30 (c) Conduct or compile basic research regarding
31 student acquisition of mathematics and science knowledge and

2 (d) Develop comprehensive course frameworks for
3 mathematics and science courses that emphasize rigor and
4 relevance at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
5 Student achievement data should be used to aid in the
6 development of course frameworks for low-performing schools,
7 special needs students, females, and minorities.
8 (e) Disseminate information regarding research-based
9 teaching practices in mathematics and science to teachers and
10 teacher educators in the state.
11 (f) Collect, manage, and report on assessment
12 information regarding student achievement in mathematics and
13 science. The report shall include student achievement by
14 ethnic group.
15 (g) Establish partnerships with public and private
16 state universities, community colleges, school districts, and
17 other appropriate entities to further increase student
18 achievement in science and mathematics.
19 (h) Develop a comprehensive plan, with input from
20 school districts, to increase the number and percentage of
21 females and minority students enrolling in and successfully
22 completing mathematics and science courses..
23 (2) The department shall monitor this center through
24 the Division of K-12 Public Schools.
