1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing March 29, 2006, as
3 "FSU Day."

5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State
6 University is the oldest continuous site of higher education
7 in Florida, and was the site of the state's first chapter of
8 Phi Beta Kappa, chartered in 1935, and
9 WHEREAS, in 1994, the Florida State University joined
10 an elite group of the nation's top research universities,
11 being designated as a "Research I" institution by the Carnegie
12 Foundation, and
13 WHEREAS, today Florida State University offers graduate
14 and undergraduate degrees in 565 fields within 17 independent
15 colleges and schools, taught by a faculty of 1,897 members,
16 which has included 10 National Academy of Sciences members and
17 6 Nobel Laureates, and
18 WHEREAS, the Florida State University houses the
19 National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, which uses the
20 world's most powerful magnet to conduct research into the
21 frontiers of science and engineering technologies for a new
22 century, and
23 WHEREAS, the Florida State University recently
24 graduated its second Rhodes Scholar, Garrett Johnson, who was
25 one of only 32 students in the United States to receive this
26 distinguished award, and
27 WHEREAS, the fully accredited Florida State University
28 College of Medicine, the first new M.D. program to be
29 established in the United States since 1982, graduated its
30 inaugural class, and currently has 223 medical students and 5
31 Ph.D. students enrolled, and

1 WHEREAS, the college experience at Florida State
2 University continues to enrich the lives of students due to
3 the long-standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and
4 cultural diversity on its campus along with the aggressive
5 recruitment of diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE,
6
7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That the Senate recognizes March 29, 2006, as "FSU Day"
10 in Tallahassee and congratulates Florida State University on
11 its contributions as an outstanding institution of higher
12 education in Florida.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
14 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr. T. K.
15 Wetherell, President of Florida State University, as a
16 tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
